Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick have chosen not to pay for the new drug, which is formulated to make abuse more difficult.

Unlike OxyContin, the tablet is hard to crush and when added to liquid, it forms a thick gel that stops oxycodone from being extracted for injection.

But that won't help those who have developed addictions to the drug in pill form, Fischer said. "They can still simply swallow it," he said.

I wonder, how many people actually need drugs of this calibre in their homes anyways? There cannot be that many home uses for heroin alternatives.

Secondly, where there's a will there is a way...people will work extraordinarily hard to find a way to crush those things up and poke them into their arms. If there's a chemical in the pill that forces it into a gel state when water or liquid is added, then I am sure there is a clarifier available on the market somewhere that would reduce the gel to a liquid.(hell, wineries utilize a clay based product to "fine" the wine.)

Thirdly, this will just move to increase the value of the pills of the market. The drug makers themselves are glad to see this happen. Fact is, these drug companies overproduce their drugs by millions of pills per year or even per month. The excess are then sold to third world nations which then re-export them back to Canada through alternative methods...disguised inside other materials. That is a fact.

Fourth, people will just move to the patches. Morphine patches are a much more dangerous issue...they are smoked after being dissected by the user and are much more deadly than the pills on the streets. Generally they are bought from people recieving end of life care for cancer or other terminal diseases.

No matter what, people will attempt to escape their dismal lives through variety of methods. It doesn't matter if you ban Oxys' or anything. People will just continue to use, and will continue to search for those pills, and will sell their souls for one brief moment of pleasure.

Find the cure to escapism and you'll solve just about every mess we have.

Should be an interesting summer here in Oxy County. According to the recent stories in our newspaper, we have a huge problem with opiate addictions and we also have the longest waiting times for treatment, most of which is outside of our county. Health Canada claims that oxycontin will be weened out over the next few months, and replaced by OxyNeo. At the same time, our woodstock police chief is expecting to be awarded with a Safe Community Designation...hope it comes before the oxy supply runs out.
