Cowan Park: Utility Bills Gone Wild

Cowan Park: Utility Bills Gone Wild

They're asking for 75-thousand dollars this year to help with operational costs, that include some jaw-dropping hydro bills.

December's hydro bill was over 9100-dollars, January's wasn't much better at 8100-dollars.

Wow. What a nightmare for the taxpayers of Woodstock.

Listen, you guys built it, you guys should finance it.

I don't have kids that pay soccer...never have, never will. Most kids in the region are not even financially capable of even trying out for the local soccer association as the tryout costs are well over $100. (to a poor kid with no cash, a hundred bucks to toss into the air is an awful lot of money when you're staring at an empty dinner plate)

Taking tens of thousands of dollars from the taxpayer to pay for your persona fetish is well kind of lame. You guys built it and you guys ought to pay for it.

There's no free rides in these austerity years.

Screw them. When there are people in this community that can barely afford to pay their own hydro bills there is no way they should be taxed to pay to illuminate that shrine to Woodstock's Recreation Elitists.

Let them increase user fees to pay their goddam bills instead of taxing the poor to finance their special playground.

    1. No shit. This is a travesty. People should be on their way downtown with pitchforks. But you and I both know that they won't. Instead, people will sit on their coective asses and will do nothing. They just allow the thieves to continue thieving.

From the story on Heart FM.... The city's Engineering Office is working with the Soccer Club to try and get to the bottom of the excessive bills, but in its note to council, the Soccer Club fears there may be a "serious fault with the design of the mechanical components of the facility."

Oh really? Why does Woodingford come to mind when I read this? Who approved the purchase of these "mechanical components?" Who installed them? Who inspected and approved the installation? Could it be the very same City Engineering Office that is now going to "get to the bottom of the problem?"

And..... how much are we going to be expected to pay to fix another boondoggle that was overseen by our local brain trust of electeds and appointeds?

I'm sure the Engineering Manager that oversaw the project will be forthcoming with answers. After all, he's always "happy to answer questions."

Why is it that people forget that our recreational facilities never make any money. The complex costs us net $800K to operate never mind the Civic Centre. This council never considered operating costs in their agreement with the soccer club - where were the staff on this issue? It's a huge building and will never pass on the entire costs on to the 2,500+ kids they serve. Pay attention to the current budgets to see just how "aware" the staff are.

Staff were precisely where they were told to be and did precisely what they were told to do.

Don't blame staff for doing as they are told by their political masters. This mess rests squarely in the laps of the decision makers, most of whom still sit on Council.

Staff make the budgets. Read them.

Councillors review and approve the budgets. Maybe they should have read them.

This isn't about budgets. This is about hydro bills and taxes. I don't want to read the budgets. I want to read Cowan Park's hydro bills.

Their claim is the hydro bills are unusually high and that justifies them taking more money from taxpayers. Are their bills higher this year than they were last year, or the year before? Is there a "mechanical problem" or are they just playing Lying For Dollars.

  9. Hell, my hydro bills went from 250 a month to 420 month in one year...this is after installing the stupid exploding lightbulbs, and after adjusting my lifestyle to do laundry and dishes at 4 am.
I will assume their hydro bill is high because at 4 am if you drive by the place, it's lit up like xmas for some stupid reason...perhaps the folks who built it just like to see their legacy in lights or something.
Fact is, it is the councils' issue. Most of the idiots on council were on council when the project was approved. They lied to us, didnt tell us we'd be on the hook later on.
    What else is new?
If it's politcally expedient to lie, the fuckers will.
Im not paying any increase in taxes to keep the rich folks at cowan park happy.
I'd prefer to see it sold if they cant afford it.

  10. and hey...if they have 2500 kids signed up at $200 a pop....what did they do with that money...and why wasnt it used for the hydro bills?
And why not ask the parents of the supposed 2500 users to pay for their usage? Now that's a novel idea...pay for what YOU use.
I use nothing...I should pay zero.

My hydro bills are higher than they were last year. Where do I get the forms to fill out so Council can give me some money?
