2010 And what it meant for me

There were a ton of events that changed our world this past year both locally and nationally. In fact, there are so many things that happened that one would be hard pressed to isolate any one item for scrutiny.
I suppose that for myself, the biggest issue for me was a choice that I made at the beginning of 2010 to run for the position of mayor of Woodstock. Tons of people let me know early on that they felt that I was making an error and many people asked me to run for council instead. Most felt that I would have made a good councillor, but my point was that if elected to council there is nothing to do but be a paperweight when one sits as a councillor in a town like this where politics and corruption run the same roads, and where those two things are rarely seperated from each other.
Yes, Woodstock is a city rife with corrupt officials and council members and my goal was to change that, and not be just another cog in the broken wheel of small town politics.
I am glad not to have to sit on a council surrounded by persons who have little interest in anything aside from their own self interests. I am glad not to be the head of a council that prefers to keep things the way they are. A local S-R article pointed that one out as well...that Sobeski has no intent on changing anything, but he might give us a little more information but not a lot.
That's what the population wanted though, and more than 6,000 folk prefer the idea of being kept in the dark in a system that remains the same as it ever was, dedicated to the people who make the backroom deals.
Four years from now there will be no differences between the final years of Michael Harding and the first four years of Pat Sobeski. Considering the current mayor supported the former mayor fundementally on most issues I will say that the population of Woodstock voted for more of the same...under a new suit with a new name, with many less brains. We have a blatantly ignorant population ... I have convinced myself of this. In fact, if you check the stats you will discover that the majority of people in this city have never graduated so I guess a dumbed down leader fits the role quite nicely in a community of dumbed down people.
Pat's line that information is the currency of democracy is just another line of bullshit from an equally pretentious old fart. He forgot to tell the dumb fucks that this does not apply to anything he has his fingers in.
The only real difference between Harding and Sobeski is that Harding was/is actually smarter than this old waffling bag of nails. But people were willing to let themselves be taken in by the mantra of "he's a nice old guy in a nice starchy suit", and "I'm a former conservative MP that got tossed from office and I need another job badly." Nothing worse than seeing a former politician living on welfare you know. The gnashig and screaming is horrendous.
Even worse, one must wonder how some of the most possibly ass backwards people on earth got themselves elected to council or city county council despite their involvement in corrupt practices for which they were investigated for?(like the leaking of information etc...) It's the money that gets these people there...and let's not forget they have daddy's party to back them....if that person had to run a race on here own...she would have gotten tossed out long ago. Truly it is the stupidity of voters that these people count on, and by that grace we see several fools sitting on this council that would make even the worse criminal pale.
You can be a drunkard that likes young girls and still make it to council. You could thwart the investigation of an integrity commisioner(as if you had any integrity in you to investigate) You  can be a failed leader and still make it on council here. You could be the idiot that helped push free trade onto Canadians which resulted in hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs to dissappear and be a mayor in an industrial town that relied on those jobs and still be elected mayor.
Do you know why?
Because the population is utterly stupid and lazy.
That's what I learned in 2010...
And there is no way to re-educate the masses as the masses are not wanting education while wading around in the waters of ignorance.
What's in store for 2011? The same shit we just swallowed in 2010, and that's what the majority gets and deserves.

Well I hope you not going to run in the next municipal election Jim. Although I did vote for you. From this article, you insulted the people of Woodstock. So really you probaly would not get my vote. But there is always a strong possibility you will.

"From this article, you insulted the people of Woodstock....."

Calling obviously ignorant people ignorant may be insulting but it is also true. Our current Mayor and Council think the majority of voters are ignorant too. Their behaviour both on Council and during the campaign prove that nicely.

What's your preference? Someone who states the truth despite the fact that it leaves a bad taste in your mouth or the usual suspects who lie to your face and tell you how well informed you are?

I'll stick with the guy who tells the truth.

You sound a little jaded...there Jim.
Unfortunately, change takes time as it is inherit in human nature to reject changes.
We only have the power to change ourselves, our perceptions and reactions.
Now after stating that, I believe that people who work together for a common good are the most powerful at effecting changes...but alas we live in a culture of selfishness, greed and NIMBY (the effects of capitalism).
Very bad for the community spirit.
How do we unit the community to effect needed changes.....perhaps find a common enemy that appeals to the selfish nature of most humans.

Oh noes! Capitalism rears its ugly head again. Kinda like global warming, you can blame Capitalism for everything - without having to present any rational argument to back it up.

The problems we face locally are entirely due to Council being unaccountable to the voters. For that you can blame the Municipal Act and the extension of the terms of office. Both are entirely under the control of our Provincial Government which, in case you haven't noticed, happens to be the most left-leaning gaggle of loons ever to "serve" in the history of the Province.

We need a return to a two year term for municipal councils and transparency and accountability legislation with teeth.

"I am happy to not have voted."

Happy? If you can't support anyone on the ballot that's fine but its nothing to be happy about.

You should be mad as hell not to have voted.
