HOW MANY SUMMER STUDENTS WILL BE RELATED TO EXISTING STAFF MEMBERS?
Someone came in to see me last week and made a point.
They wondered, how many summer positions are filled with students who are related to full time staffers at the City of Woodstock?
Who does the hiring and is it a prerequisite to be related to a member of the city staff?
Good question. I doubt we'll get an answer because who would want to give up a cash cow like that? I'll send a note to the retiring human resources guy today and see what Tony has to say about this...
Some work places give preference to children of their employees for summer hirings.

ReplyDeleteThose are private businesses. The City is taxpayer funded. Why should taxpayers be paying to employ city employees' kids when their own can't find summer jobs? It's called nepotism. Look it up.
Yes, it is called nepotism. And it is often practiced in the private sector. Yes, the City is taxpayer funded and those dollars go towards paying those summer students. And some of my dollars also go towards paying the summer students at WalMart, so I'm not sure what the heck you're talking about - you don't make any sense. Private sector businesses sometimes have these policies because it leads to improved moral which is good for productivity. If you believe this tool for increased productivity should not be available in the public sector that's fine, that's your right. But I personally believe the public sector should, in many ways, strive for productivity improvements just like the private sector, which means using tools like this. Good for them!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolute load of horseshit.
ReplyDeleteSome of your dollars go toward paying summer students at Walmart? So what? Is that your idea of a relevant comment? You can choose whether to give your money to Walmart. Walmart can't put a lien on your property for refusing to shop there. We're talking about the friends and relatives of city employees receiving favours not available to other taxpayers.
Improved moral? No doubt. I'm sure the moral of those favoured city employees improves by leaps and bounds every time they manage to get a relative on the payroll at the expense of the people that have no choice but to pay their salaries.
There are many young people looking for summer jobs in this community. Their parents all pay taxes. Why should some be excluded from an opportunity that should be available to all simply because they aren't related to someone special?
You are defending the indefensible. I have to wonder why. Are you posting from a City of Woodstock computer?
ps: I used the word nepotism in the Woodstock municipal code search engine. "word not found."
ReplyDeleteWhy am I not surprised.
Hmmm. Been 2 days since I accused him of working for local government and not a peep. I must have hit a nerve. Wonder how many relatives he's got on the payroll.
