DION CLAIMS FLAHERTY OUT TO GET ONTARIO
Liberal leader Staphane Dion has come out against Jim Flaherty after the federal finance minister continued to attack the Ontario liberals over high taxation in the province that he feels is responsible for the downturn in the Ontario economy.(I guess Jim didn't hear about the US mortgage mess).
Flaherty claims that "Ontario is the last place to start a business" as a result of high taxes, but Dwight Duncan the Ontario Finance Minister says that Ontario is on an even keel with the majority of provinces in Canada on the issue of corporate taxes.
The argument has not gained the Tories any brownie points in Ontario where a poll released last week indicated the Liberal partys' fortunes were rising after weeks of scandal in the CONservative government. Nearly 40% of Canadas' population lives in Ontario, and the federal liberals are hitching their horse to their provincial conterparts who recently won an unprecendeted landlside in the province.
Many people believe that the feud between Flaherty and McGuinty goes back to when McGuinty and his liberals tossed out the CONservatives in Ontario and that Flaherty has a large axe to grind over it.
If the CONservatives are to even consider gaining enough ground for a majority government they will need to attack the most populus province and its' leaders in order to gain the ground they will need as they have tapped all of their other electoral resources throughout Canada.
Frankly, I tend to think that a minority government of any party is in the best interests of Canadians as I do not think that any of them are really fit to govern us.

That last sentence deserves it's own post ... in BIG capitol letters.
You know damned well that we all love those lyin' rat bastards:)
Mr Flatulence had the record last year as the biggest spending Prime Minister in Canadian History on a per capita basis with adjustments for inflation according to Macleans magazine -
(The Conservatives only tucked $2.7 billion of new spending into last year’s figures — the same year-end splurge they routinely savaged when in opposition — rather than the two and three times that amount the opposition wanted. But still: under this Conservative government, Ottawa will spend more than $208 billion this fiscal year, or a little over $6,000 for every man, woman and child. Even after adjusting for inflation and population growth, that’s the most it’s ever spent. It’s one-third more real dollars per citizen than the government spent a decade ago. The budget titles itself “Responsible Leadership.” Imagine what they’d have spent if they were irresponsible.)
He has also brought in pro-rated accounting methods - the same thing he used in Ontario where big ticket items like airtransport for troops are budgeted over the life of the item. Say $5 Billion over 10 years only shows up as 1/2 million in expenditures - Once the bills start coming in on receipt of equipment watch out debt grow. OF COURSE He can blame a slowing economy!
Clearly Mr. Flaherty and Premier McGuinty do not like each other and it goes all the way back to the days when they sat across from each other in the Ontario legislature.
The verbal spat between them is not helping anyone. The "both" need to grow up, put their differences aside and get on with the business of running our country.
Well, it makes my little Reformer heart quiver, to see a PM tell Ontario, 40% of the voting population:
'we are not going to buy your votes with special handouts, while the ROC does it on their own'...!!!
McGuinty should get his tax rate in line with Quebec's.
That would be in the best interest of his province, otherwise, companies will invest right next door, and exclude Ontario as a choice to set up shop.
Would dropping the corp tax rate from 14% to 10% put Ontario on the 'have not' side of the equalization equation?
Yes. It's fun to see the feds tell McWeasel where to shove it but the rest of Canada is hardly doing it on their own. I take it you've never heard of equalization payments.
Harper will make his offer for Ontario votes when the time comes just like he did during the last election campaign.
With any luck he'll send the bill to Quebec.
PMSH offered all provinces compensation to harmonize taxes.
So, is McGuinty trying to avoid Ontario becoming a have not province, by not lowering his taxes?
He should do what ever it takes to keep Ontario's mfg sector alive, even if it means going on the federal equalization dole.
That's why it's there, no shame in that.
Is a transfer of wealth from one province to the next really what should be taking place?
