HARPERS' ELECTED SENATE PLANS CRUSHED BY NOVA SCOTIA CONSERVATIVES
Nova Scotia CONservatives yesterday voted overwhelmingly at their annual party convention to pass on Stephen Harpers' idea for an elected senate after deciding that there was a lack of time to study this issue and to organize a ballot vote for this coming fall.
Lunenburg West delegate Donna Malone told the convention that " I am a little bit concerned that there is a lack of time to organize this" and Premier Rodney MacDonald said that an elected senate was not their first priority.
Nova Scotia is short three senators at present and Harper is refusing to appoint any unless they have been elected first.
Bert Brown(elected in Alberta, but appointed by Harper to the senate) said that if Nova Scotia ratified the deal it would then become practice to elect senators instead of just precedence.
