CITY OF LONDON OFFERS GOLF COURSE DEVELOPER $700,000.00 FOR WOODLOT
The city of Woodstock could take a few lessons from councillors in London, Ontario.
This week London city council moved to have their developement office, offer an amount rumoured to be $700,000.00 for a woodlot they valued early last year at being worth around the $100,000.00 mark.
Just goes to show what a smart council would do to appease its' residents.
London City council, after facing immense pressure from residents from the area surrounding the woodlot in the Adelaide/Windermere road area of North London, decided that allowing the developer to go ahead and build a course over the area which is privately held would be against the wishes of the public, and not in the best interests of the environment.
Developer Vito Frijia has been considering knocking down all of the trees, stripping the land and turning it into a golf course driving range for some time now.
On November 7, 2007, community activists numbering about "100", met at a London community centre to develope plans for a fight.
"We're going to fight this all the way," said Ann Hutchison, "Our city needs many more trees and not many less."
Even numerous London city councillors are onside with this.
Coun. Joni Baechler attended the meeting to answer questions from the public. (Holy shit, a councillor that actually wants to listen to the people? I wonder why this type of question and answer session hasn't happened here in Woodstock?Fear, that's why!)She represents the area that includes Adelaide woods and heads the city's planning committee. "Forests are critical to economic health, but also for livability," said Baechler, who is opposed to chopping down the trees. "I think the number of people here clearly demonstrates how important this issue is to the broader community."
Wow, 100 people show up, and councillors are goo gooing all over them, wishing not to piss them off, but here in Woodstock, council is willing and prepared to turn their back on the community that elected them. ^thousands upon thousands of people have signed petitions against the butchering of a park!(Yes, a public park, publicly owned, under consideration for privately owned developement...what a farce.)
Controller Bud Polhill suggested one possible solution in which the city and the community would work together to purchase the land from Frijia. "We've tried all kinds of things and we can't seem to come to a mutual agreement," he said. "There's got to be a solution."
One local resident whose house overlooks the wooded area says she's been living there for nearly 30 years. "I think it's great to have all that green space," she said. "We need all the trees we can get,"echoing sentiments heard all across the city.
Hell, Woodstock city council wouldn't even have to spend a nickle here on this one, and they are still goo gooing all over the developer.
You'd think with so many people against this mess, they'd want to walk away.
But then again, the majority of members of this council epitomize the common stereotypical aloofness and disconnect from their constituents that most elected fools posess.
If we cannot ask our council to act in our best interests, then for what reason have we elected them?
I think the only reason is to fill the seats of city hall so we have some cheap comedy to watch on Rogers cablecast, and to reaffrim to us that they are the reason our city is being butchered by development and unauthorized developement.
