And Body scanners...

Body Scanners
Frankly, I do not have a big issue with body scanners at Canadian Airports, afterall I would prefer to get onto a plane where I know some crazed freak hasn't got a jock strap full of explosive something.(beyond the normal explosive something that ones' jock may contain)
I think what really is the issue is who is on the other end of these things...are they vetted, checked for criminal records? Will they be permitted to view children in the nude on these scanners? And will the scanners be used or each and every person that trots through the terminal doors?
I would think that in order to prevent a discriination bid from anyone that applying the technology to all persons should be a no brainer.
According to John Baird, the 44 scanners will cost a minimum of $11 million, and not all airports will have the equipment, only the major ones.
I guess terrorists only use the national airports and fly with major carriers.

Liberal Mp's Will return To work While CONservative Mps Take Another Break

LIBERALS AGREE TO RETURN TO WORK WHILE CONS SIT ON THEIR DUFFS AT THE OLYMPICS
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has made arrangement for all of his 76 MP's to return to the House of Commons as scheduled  for the last week of January to continue working.
Ignatieff says that they will keep the heat on the CONservative government and in particular the governments' failure to release details of alleged Afghan detainee abuses to the committee that were investigating those allegations.
Harpers' prorogation killed those committees so it is unclear what work the Liberals will be doing in Ottawa, but they say that they will be keeping the discussion going with the other opposition parties into the issue.
Bob Rae said it was important to show Canadians that conversations into the issue cannot simply be shut down by a prime ministerial edict. "He can't shut down the issues. He can't stop people from asking questions about the Afghan detainee issue. He can't stop people from asking questions about the budget. He can't stop people from talking about politics," Rae says. "It's our job as the Official Opposition to respond to that hunger for a real political conversation."
A Facebook group dedicated against the prorogation has more than 40,000 members after only a few days. They are arranging for public protests in more than 11 major cities in the hopes that it will force the Conservatives back to work.
I guess this is the quintessential..."work to rule" thing?

Thousands upon thousands of Canadians unemployed, the economy remains in tatters, credit card debt has balloooned, numerous pieces of legislation held up or completely thrown away and for what? Political expediency, that's what.
Our local MP says its' so they can stack the senate...I say its' so they can avoid doing any work and it prevents them from facing the music over the Afghanistan torture probe and many other important issues that they wish not to face up to.
"Oxford MP, Dave MacKenzie disagrees that this will become an annual break for politicians(even though this is the second time in less than 12 months that they have prorogued)and gives his input on why this situation has come into action this year.
MacKenzie says, "The very first one is that obviously, if the senate appointments are made its the opportunity to put the senate on the same basis that the house is. The party with the most seats in the senate, which will be the conservative party, will have the most members in the committee.""(from the Heart FM)
Basically he says it's so they can stack the senate in their favour. Too bad they wouldn't stack it with QUALIFIED and EDUCATED people instead of old toadies and right wing fundies who adhere to specific party principles. Too bad they wouldn't stack the place with independent thinkers versus fully dependent arse kissers.
Considering Daves' party, the Conservatives fought several elections on the idea of a triple e senate, it's shocking to see them revert to the old school practice of stacking the senate, but then again, what else is new. This government has thrived on lying to the public, deception being its' main concern more than the art of governing.
All parties should agree that the senate should be elected. Harpers' moves certainly point to this requirement. If you want the man to be accountable, then you must hold yourself to that same measure of accountability. You cannot have it 2 ways. You must allow yourselves to be judged by the same yardstick that you use on your opponent.
If it was a Liberal government doing the same thing, I would still feel the same way. What Canada has is a large group of useless people sitting in the senate sucking up tax resources. We need to redefine their role and how they get there. Until then it's too bad we get stuck footing the bill for this mess.
We can all do better than that.

New director of Public Health & Emergency Services announced

New director brings 14 years experience in public health management with emphasis on building community partnerships
Warden Paul Holbrough today announced the appointment of Lynn Beath as the new director of Public Health & Emergency Services, effective February 1, 2010. Beath’s appointment was approved by Oxford County Council on January 4. Beath joins Oxford County Public Health & Emergency Services from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit where she has served in leadership roles for the past 14 years. In her current position as director and Chief Nursing Officer, she has direct oversight for the health unit’s Community Health Disease Prevention Division. Her experience spans a range of public health policy and program areas as well as involvement in local initiatives for community centres, family health teams, and two Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs). Beath holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Western Ontario and joined the public health field as a public health nurse. As the new director of Public Health & Emergency Services, Beath will head an upper-tier municipal service with a $16.9-million annual operating budget and approximately 160 employees. The department’s services include family health, immunization, healthy living, infectious disease prevention, sexual health, environmental health, emergency services, and other programs that support healthy behaviours in a healthy environment. QUOTES “I know the community will join me in welcoming Lynn to the County of Oxford. Public Health is a key service delivered by the County, and Lynn’s strength in building community partnerships will help ensure we can continue to deliver high quality community health care here in Oxford in the most effective way possible.”- Warden Paul Holbrough, County of Oxford “The County is pleased to have recruited someone with Lynn’s leadership experience: she will be an asset not only to Public Health but also to the County of Oxford management team. At the same time, I would also like to publicly acknowledge the outstanding work Mary Metcalfe has performed over the past year in her dual role as acting director of Public Health and manager of Health Protection, leading us very capably through the H1N1 outbreak and one of the largest vaccination programs the health unit has undertaken.”- Michael Bragg, Chief Administrative Officer, County of Oxford

A Really Good Story From The Sentinel Review on Caregivers...Caregivers often overlooked in fight against Alzheimer's

This is a pretty good story by Heather Rivers of the local Sentinel Review.
As the parent of a globally disabled child I provide countless hours of support at all hours of the day for my son with little available respite for me. even getting to the bathroom is an issue.
In a town of 36,000 people, you would think that we could build a respite care facility for all of the families that deal with these kinds of issues. There are hundreds upon hundreds of local caregiving families who expend their energies on a daily basis caring for those who cannot care for themselves.
Even a break for a few hours would be a wonderful opportunity for many of us.
As part of my campaign I will work hard to ensure that there is a respite care facility opened  in this community. Woodstock needs respite care facilities, not an upgraded art gallery. It's time to return the focus to the people.
Come hell or high water, it's going to happen.

LINESMAN REMAINS IN CRITICAL CARE IN LONDON
A Startford referee, Kevin Brown remains in critical condition in London after suffering a slashed cartoid artery during the break up of a fight that took place during a scheduled game between the Woodstock Renegades and the New Hamburg Firebirds last week.
Mr Brown suffered extensive injuries related to the incident and struggles for his life now in London. According to a team member, Kevin suffered a stroke after the incident which has affected his recovery to date.
As a member of the citizenry of Woodstock, I would like to offer my support to his family and to our local Renegades family in any way that is possible. We all wish for a speedy recovery for Kevin.

Danish Police Shoot Danish Cartoonist Attacker

MAN WHO DREW DANISH MOHAMMED CARTOON SAVED BY POLICE WHO SHOOT HIS ATTACKER
The man responsible for drawing a caricature of the Islamic Prophet Mohammed, Kurt Westergaard, was attacked by an axe wielding Al Qaida linked Somalian man who was then shot in the arm in leg by the Danish police.
According to the artist, the crazed man attempted to break down the door of his home with an axe as he and his 5 year old grand-daughter fled in fear to their homes' safe room.( A room constructed to protect a homes' occupants in the event of an attack.) Mr Westergaard was able to contact police from the room. They arrived within two minutes but when police tried to arrest the man, he resisted raising his axe against the police. Police were forced to shoot the attacker, but the attacker is expected to live.

Now This Is Worth Reading....Andrew Coyne

(clicking on the link will take you to Macleans' magazine)
This is a pretty good analysis of Harpers' decision to shut down parliament. It is a disturbing idea that after months of bickering and associated nasty comments from a belligerent PMO regarding legislation purportedly being held up by a liberal dominated senate, that this Prime Minister would close down discussion, put parliament into mothball mode, and refuse to work with the interests of Canadians at heart.
This is I feel(as well as many other Canadians I will assume)makes a mockery out of Canadas' democratic system.
Like the article says, MP's should stand firm in their desire to remain at work and should convene parliament with or without the Prime Minister and "his" team.
Canadians deserve much better than that.

Do Electric Cars Cause Cancer?

By Matthew DeBord

http://www.thebigmoney.com/blogs/shifting-gears/2009/12/15/do-electric-cars-cause-cancer

The world of electric cars is a rah-rah world. There are numerous economic arguments against their widespread adoption, but that hasn’t stopped government officials, environmental activists, and most importantly automakers from moving aggressively toward electrified transportation. On balance, ramped-up EV development is a good thing: Over the next 40 years, our existing oil supplies are going to run out, according to a set of more-or-less accepted geological assumptions generally referred to as "peak oil." The concept, which was first articulated in the 1950s by a petroleum scientist named M. King Hubbert, doesn’t say, Bam! We’re suddenly going to have no more oil in 2020 or whatever. Rather, the theory says that petroleum discovery and production will at some point peak, after which it will follow a declining rather than ascending curve. Depending on whom you talk to, peak oil has already happened, is happening, will happen soon, or is a few decades off. But there’s agreement that it will take place.
So we need to switch over to alternative forms of transportation, or at least prepare ourselves to do so. Because transportation consumes a major amount of oil, bringing EVs into the picture in a big way is seen as a solution, with the added benefit of eliminating tailpipe emissions and at least stabilizing global warming (although the burning of coal for energy also has to go away). Obviously, however, an EV running off an electric motor with a battery that can weigh 600 lbs. raises the health-hazard issue: Does the electromagnetic field generated by the car pose a threat to drivers and passengers?
This question has been bandied around the blogosphere, and answered as best as can be, given limited research, much of which is extrapolated from EMF studies of the fields generated by power lines, cell phones, household appliances, and so on. The National Cancer Institute says that there are indications that EMFs can cause certain cancers, but the research is far from conclusive. EVs and hybrids haven’t been in the market long enough for studies to be done, although automakers have tested their vehicles for EMFs (conventional cars as well as hybrids and EVs), and found them to be within accepted limits.
Unfortunately, nothing in this area is completely benign. Autos pose risk simply because they go fast and there are lots of them, enough for 40,000 people to die in accidents every year. But we trade that off for the convenience of personal mobility. EVs will solve peak oil and some emissions problems, but they will also stress the power-generating grid, initially run, in a matter of speaking, mostly on coal, and create thousands of new, rolling EMFs. Ultimately, the only way to completely dodge these problems is to remake society according to radical efficiency principles: live in compact communities (as large as megacities or as small as rural villages, but no gray-area exurbs in between), generate power from sources such as wind and sun (which means much less power than what we currently get from fossil fuels), abandon personal mobility, limit freight shipping, etc., etc., etc.
That’s right, it’s not going to happen. So even in the seemingly unlikely event that EVs and hybrids do cause cancer, we’ll have to tolerate that risk, if we’re going to move forward rather than back.

Common mechanism underlies many diseases of excitability

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-12/joci-cmu122209.php
Inherited mutations in voltage-gated sodium channels (Navs) are associated with many different human diseases, including genetic forms of epilepsy and chronic pain. Theodore Cummins and colleagues, at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, have now determined the functional consequence of three such mutations. As noted by Stephen Cannon and Bruce Bean, in an accompanying commentary, these results suggest that there might be a common mechanism for many channelopathies, diseases arising from mutations in ion channel genes such as those analyzed by Cummins and colleagues.
The authors studied the functional consequences of mutations in the human peripheral neuronal sodium channel Nav1.7, the human skeletal muscle sodium channel Nav1.4, and the human heart sodium channel Nav1.5, which are associated with an extreme pain disorder, a muscle condition characterized by slow relaxation of the muscles, and a heart condition and sudden infant death syndrome, respectively.
Expression of these mutated proteins in a rat-derived dorsal root ganglion neuronal system led to the conclusion that the mutations all altered opening of the sodium channels such that the channels quickly reopened after an electrical impulse had been fired by the nerve cell causing a resurgent sodium current that triggered a second electrical impulse to be fired rapidly after the first. These observations are consistent with the diseases all being characterized by excitability, over activity of cells that rely on electrical currents, such as nerve cells, skeletal muscle cells, and heart muscle cells.

And Good Riddance....2009

TUMULTUOUS AND TRYING YEAR FOR CANADIANS AND US HERE IN WOODSTOCK
To me Woodstock is symbolic of a national crisis that has been persistently gaining ground. The greatest threat to our national and civic security is the utter and sheer lack of respect for the democratic functions and institutions that we developed and built over the course of many years.
Throughout just about every tier of government that we encounter in our daily lives there seems to be a tragic disconnect between the people and the bureacracy. We break open the daily news and read of tyrannical decisions, improper political processes and backroom meetings with regular certainty. This over-exposure to these political melodramas has resulted in the wholesale fleeing from the polls of nearly 50 % of Canadas' voting population. The diaspora of people from elections has reduced democracy to a bitter joke.
Here in Woodstock, the numbers are close to the national numbers, perhaps a bit better, but not by much. This leads me to believe that people have lost faith in our local leaders, lost faith in the local decision making process, and have lost control of the very thing that was designed to protect them when all else fails.
The key is, we have lost control of our local council and mayor, just as much as we've lost control of our federal government when it shuts down democracy through an act of sheer dictatorship;the proroguing of parliament.
Locally, our council acts in a similar fashion. Defying all ethical logic, this council and mayor have driven taxes through the roof, failed to protect the people from the belligerent actions of the county on the issue of water rates that are disproportionately high compared to neighbouring communities and have failed to deliver a safe community in return for our support. We have been subjected to years of abuse. This cycle has got to end.
There are a few councillors who might be prepared to work in your best interests, and then there are a few who need to go.(this idea seems to work on all levels of government.)
Picking and choosing the right ones will be difficult to do. They kind of look good, nice clothes and clean teeth, but what is in their hearts is yet to be decided, and in some cases, some folks wear their hearts on their sleeves.
You can identify some of them easily by looking at their voting records, and deciding for yourself if what they have done has been in your best interests, or in the interests of a community.
What I am recommending to everyone today is this...
Pick one councillor that you support. The ballott will ask you to pick four. DO NOT PICK FOUR. Each and every vote that you cast for another councillor aside from your personal favourite, cancels out your vote for your favourite. The odds are against your personal choice. The council vote is RIGGED to ensure the survival of the incumbent council. It is RARE that anyone wins a seat on council anywhere when this system of voting is used. The present council has the legal right to change this by ordering the City Clerk to redesign this voting system, but have FAILED to do so as it would result in them LOSING THEIR POSTS.(most likely!)
After analysing polling results over the past several elections I have realized that if people had only picked one person, then most of them would NEVER HAVE BEEN RE-ELECTED AGAIN.
So that's my hope for 2010.
We can stop the madness with a little bit of savviness. All it takes is the will to check only ONE NAME. Your ONE VOTE FOR ONE COUNCILLOR will result in your vote wielding more clout. This will entice whoever is running to work harder for YOU.
 I will do the rest.
If I am elected as Head of Woodstock Council, as Mayor, I will ensure that all councillors respond to your requests. If they do not, I WILL PERSONALLY AND PUBLICLY CENSURE them on your behalf. I care nothing about an activist council, but I do care that the council PAYS HEED TO THE RATEPAYER in no uncertain terms. This will be a no BS system that keeps you the ratepayer on the top. They are indebted to you...they ought to respond or be criticized for their inaction.
I will during a swearing in ceremony make a community and personal pledge to enact a recall mechanism no matter how hard it is to enact. I will work unwaveringly towards that end. This will always remain the focal point. It is the only way to ensure that effective accountable government can be had. I will enact whislteblower protections in our municipality. People have come forward who are employed by the city in various capacities citing irregularities in processes. Their concerns should be met with action, not inaction.(hmmm, i wonder if anyone remembers sending a city staffer down to my shop to pick up a stack of FD paperwork that ended up in my mailbox one evening? I wonder what ever happened to those serious concerns? Have they ever been addressed? They should be!)
I believe in the power of the people. We were born into a system of inherent democratic principles that I will always uphold. I will always defer to the people. This is all that matters.
This is always all that matters. The people are the sum of the city. Without us, there is no city. Without us, there is nothing.
We demand accountable government for the people and by the people.
That's my hope for 2010. That's our only hope.

And Canada Contributes Four More Bodies, Plus One Reporter To The War Of Attrition

DEAR CANADA...BREED QUICKLY, WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF FRESH BODIES TO SEND
One Canadian soldier fresh off the plane from Afghanistan for a few weeks of well deserved holidays had this to say to me yesterday in my shop...Thanks for the comments CC. Good luck on your flight back to Gagetown today. Thanks for standing up for democracy in a place where democracy is a bad word.
"The place is a mess. The country is a piece of barbed wire dirt. The people all seem to hate us no matter what we do. We are all frightened. There is no difference between the good people and the bad. They all dress the same, talk the same and have the same ideals." "The only way we will win is to destroy all of them." "There is nothing left to defend aside from an airport.""I have to go back because my friends are there dying.""We need more bodies behind guns".
That is sad. The very last thing he had to say. He wouldn't go back if it weren't for his friends.
And then yesterday after he left I heard the news, four more dead in Ohio Afghanistan. And I realized that even though we may think we are doing justice in this distant dusty land, we are doing nothing but staving off the inevitable loss that we are about to face at the hands of a tribal force. Damn the monkees, they've learned to use sticks as weapons.
Afghanistan is lost. Revolution should have only come through the people, not a foreign military. It's time to bring our troops home and to reinvest our military strength in tightening Canadas' borders. If we want to keep our nation safe, the best way is to start at home with tighter security and tighter immigration rules.

Frankly...

There is something to be feared in a man who claims he has never errored. For the rest of us who have made some sort of mistake, it becomes quite clear that we are staring into the face of a liar when we hear someone state they have never done any wrong.
It's whether or not one learns from their errors that sets one apart from the rest.

Harper Turns out The Lights In Ottawa...Again

HARPER SHUTS DOWN PARLIAMENT, AVOIDS TORTURE PROBE

The Prime Minister of Canada has shut down the House of Commons for the second time in a year after making the request to the governor general(no, that one is not worth placing capitols on anymore...her importance has waned)to do just that. The governor general naturally rubber stamped the request without any thought for Canadas' fledgling economic recovery or the fact that most Canadians would like to see their parlimentarians actually working at some point throughout the year.
Harper has once more reduced the idea of accountability to a joke with his latest action. This is nothing short of a national work stoppage.
This pororoguing will result in the shut down of all inquiries into the Afghanistan issue in specific the issue regarding torture of detainees and the complicity of our federal conservative government in that matter. This is not good for Canadians as we all deserved an answer to the issue. Closing down parliament will prevent the Conservatives from having to provide uncensored documents to the committee of inquiry into the Afghan affair...this is purely an avoidance tactic.
Closing down parliament will deep six all crime bills that the Tories have pushed for the past few years. Harper has constantly stated that the opposition Liberals have stymied those bills when in fact the bills are being stymied by Harpers' own actions, through the proroguing of parliament.
Preventing those we elect from going to work through this manner stands in stark contrast to the basic prinicples of any democratic theory.
Can Canadians afford another year of the secretive and combative Mr Harper at the wheel? Do Canadians stand for this lack of accountability and transparency at the hands of one who claimed he would return Canadas parliament to the people?
I doubt they do, but I also feel that many Canadians just don't care about who sits in parliament or for how long, or even what they do while they are there...most Canadians just don't give a damn and the reasons for that are quite apparent when you look at the assinine politics being played out on the national stage.
Go back to work you fools, we are paying you the big bucks to be there working for us, and frankly it feels as though you are robbing us of our government, and robbing us of resources in order to prop up your silly parties and their equally silly ideologies.
I still think that the only answer for Canada would have came through the formation of a coalition government comprised of willing partners from all the parties who have the will to work for the people who elected them. Shame on Stephen Harper for reducing Canadas' democracy to a joke.

And Mister Harding Says...

Every Year he tries To Learn Something New
I spotted a Michael Harding year end interview in the paper yesterday and was kind of amused that he said he likes to learn something new every year. That's pretty special.
There really is only one thing that most Woodstonians would like him to learn and that is the basics of democratic prinicples. Unfortunately, many of us believe in the old adage, that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
If you are reading a book this year Mike, I would suggest reading The Social Contract. It contains all those key elements that you seem to be missing.

28 December 2009

Election 2010....Here We Go

MUNICIPAL ELECTION 2010
And here we are at the time of year when all of those mayoral and council candidates crawl out of their little incumbent termite holes to inform us all that ....they'll be back for another four years of fun and games at our expense. This year however, these folks have not waited to toss their names into the hat...they've all pretty well announced their intentions to jack us over for the next few years and that leaves many people wondering what the heck to do now.
The choices for council are limited so far to Zach Engel(an 18 year old student from Huron Park)and the entire slew of incumbent councillors who are hoping to buy your vote for the next few years. Although councillor Tait has refused to state whether or not she will run again, I will assume that she will as she has not said that she won't.
Councillor Gerrie intends to run for whatever reason.(we aren't sure and I'm not sure he is either)
Councillor Sobeski remains coy on the subject of where he would like to run(perhaps he will run for county council or perhaps he will run for mayor?)and has not solidified his position as of yet...that's okay Pat, we're all used to the fence sitting anyways!
Mayor Harding has already stated his intent to brutalize us for another four years with his lack of accountability and integrity if its' in the cards, and right up there with that guy is James Stewart, notorius school killer of Norwich high school fame.(Mr Stewart also made some spectacular leaps at fame when he begged for a new skatepark that had already been approved and passed in a previous council session. The man had no idea of what he was jumpin up and down for and followed those lemmings right off the cliff)
From what I have seen of Stewart, the man is nothing short of Harding lite. This is not good for Woodstock.
What Woodstock needs is someone with their eye on the streets. The broken window theory comes to mind. I see garbage everywhere, run down buildings and broken playgrounds. These things are indicative of a broken community.
I see unemployed people and many other people who cannot afford their rising taxes. I see seniors being displaced by so called progress. Seniors forced to sell their family homes to cover their tax bills. I see in my town hundreds of people who are forced to make decisions to either accept poor services or move to obtain better services in other municipalities.
This community should feel like one giant family, but something is wrong and to me it boils down to one thing....the massive leadership vaccuum that we are experiencing in Woodstock.
We can only hope that in the next few weeks we see some names of possible contenders pop up here in our town.  Many Woodstonians agree that it is time for a change from the past and present situation.
In fact, Woodstock is prepared for a better future than what any of these contenders have to offer us. Like I've said before, this council needs a change, the mayors' office needs a change.
Real change doesn't come from re-electing the same people. That's kind of like turning your underwear inside out hoping for a clean side. No, I'll take a clean set from the laundry thank you, or better yet, it's time to buy a new pair.
Yes, Woodstock is prepared for a change and I will tell you now that this is where push comes to shove as I've decided fully that the best way to insure that my family(this city)has a place in this community, is to insure that by putting my money where my mouth is and tossing my name up there, not with them, but against those who have refused to yield to the taxpayer, who have refused to yield to the community. The first thing that I will do differently is listen to you the taxpayer, and to you the citizen. That's who matters.
And for the adminstration and management of the city of Woodstock(you guys don't vote for guys like me so I am not afraid to offend you), you best have your books in order, because if I should make it in there, we will undoubtedly have a good look at what's being going on in the backrooms of this community. And I am telling you there will be no relenting. All management salaries should be frozen with only a COLA increase. (2%...not 3 or 4 or more) All perks will be examined.
And if I make it there he first item on the agenda will be an inquiry into Mr Hardings' actions on the matter of Info Energy. This time he will not be able to weasel his way out of it, like he did last time when he promised accountability for the actions of the Info Energy team.
Count me in, I'm up for a fight.

And Twenty Years Ago... Romanians Took Back Their Nation

TWENTY YEARS AGO, ROMANIA REGAINED ITS' FREEDOM
It was twenty years ago that Nicolai Ceausescu and his wife Elena were convicted by a military tribunal and sent to their ultimate deaths for robbing the nation and for the brutality imposed on that nations' peoples.
Sometimes this is the only way for revolution to take place. A complete removal of those in power who refuse to yield to the forces of change.(and remove them is what they did exactly...these guys are not coming back)

Iran Continues Crackdown On Democracy Demonstrators

IRANIAN GOVERNMENT KILLS AT LEAST 8 CITIZENS
According to several news sources, hundreds of people have been arrested in clashes with Iranian security forces and at least 8 persons have been identified as having been murdered by their government on the third day of social protests in the Islamic nation.
According to the BBC, the nephew of Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, Seyed Ali Mousavi was one of the persons killed by security forces on the second day of protests.
The family of the slain man has been prevented from retrieving his body by security forces in order to prevent the body from becoming a rallying point for protesters at any funeral for the man.
The most recent clashes come after long time dissident cleric Grand Ayatollah Hoseyn Ali Montazeri passed away on December 19 at the age of 87. The Iranian government immediately moved to ban funerary services for Montazeri in the country except for in the clerics' hometown of Qom. This incited many persons resulting in protests against the government which resulted in the government then murdering 8 people in return and arresting at least 300 others.(who will probably be murdered by the Iranian government as their government treats its' people like garbage)

Airliner drama played out over Ontario - thestar.com

Airliner drama played out over Ontario - thestar.com

This is kind of scary. Luckily for all of us the man was brought down by quick thinking passengers.
If the plane had come down, authorities say it would have crashed somewhere in rural Ontario and most likely would have killed all the people on board, and perhaps a few on the ground.
How the man was able to carry high explosives onto a US bound plane is disturbing.

Depression....CMHA

THIS IS SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND...ALL OF US AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER SUFFER FROM THE EFFECTS OF DEPRESSION
Problems and misfortunes are a part of life. Everyone experiences unhappiness, and many people may become depressed temporarily when things don't go as they would like. Experiences of failure commonly result in temporary feelings of worthlessness and self-blame, while personal losses cause feelings of sadness, disappointment and emptiness. Such feelings are normal, and they usually pass after a short time. This is not the case with depressive illness.

What are the signs of depressive illness?
Depression becomes an illness, or clinical depression, when the feelings described above are severe, last for several weeks, and begin to interfere with one's work and social life. Depressive illness can change the way a person thinks and behaves, and how his/her body functions. Some of the signs to look for are: feeling worthless, helpless or hopeless, sleeping more or less than usual, eating more or less than usual, having difficulty concentrating or making decisions, loss of interest in taking part in activities, decreased sex drive,
avoiding other people, overwhelming feelings of sadness or grief, Feeling unreasonably guilty, loss of energy, feeling very tired, thoughts of death or suicide.
If you or someone you know has been experiencing a number of these symptoms, we hope this pamphlet will help you understand what is happening and encourage you or your friend to seek professional help.
What causes depression?
There is no one cause of depression, neither is it fully understood. The following factors may make some people more prone than others to react to a loss or failure with a clinical depression: specific, distressing life events, a biochemical imbalance in the brain, psychological factors, like a negative or pessimistic view of life.
There may also be a genetic link since people with a family history of depression are more likely to experience it.
How long does depression last?
The depressed feelings we all experience after a serious loss or disappointment may last for a short or a long time. How long depends on the person, the severity of the loss, and the support available to help the person to cope with it.
Clinical depression may also last for short or long periods. It rarely becomes permanent. Without professional treatment, it may end naturally after several weeks or months. With treatment, it may end much more quickly.
Does depressive illness follow a pattern?
Unfortunately, once a person has had a clinical depression, he/she is more likely to suffer from depression again. For example, some people experience seasonal cycles of depression, particularly in winter. This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.).
Five to ten percent of people who experience depression also experience states of exaggerated happiness or elation called mania. The occurrence of both depression and mania at different times is called bipolar affective disorder, while repeated experiences of depression alone is termed unipolar affective disorder.
How is depression treated?
Depression is the most treatable of mental illnesses. Most people who suffer from depression are helped by the treatment they get, which usually includes medication and/or psychological counselling. Support from family, friends and self-help groups can also make a big difference.
Many people who are seriously depressed wait too long to seek treatment or they may not seek treatment at all. They may not realize that they have a treatable illness, or they may be concerned about getting help because of the negative attitudes held by society towards this type of illness.
What can friends and family do?
It can be difficult to be with and to help someone who is seriously depressed. Some people who are depressed keep to themselves, while others may not want to be alone. They may react strongly to the things you say or do. It is important that you let them know that it is okay to talk about their feelings and thoughts. Listen and offer support rather than trying to contradict them or talk them out of it. Let them know you care. Ask them how you can help, and offer to contact their family doctor or a mental health professional. Find out about local self-help groups and attend a meeting with them. Try to be patient and non-judgemental. Most of all, don't do it alone - get other people to provide help and support too.
Do you need more help?
If you or someone you know needs more help than friends or family can provide, contact a community organization, such as the Canadian Mental Health Association, which can help you find additional support.

Up with Kindle, down with starving authors

Up with Kindle, down with starving authors
(this story leads to another page)

A scary story...sort of, but then again, everything must evolve with the times, and perhaps this is the best way to get an intellectually starved audience to read once again. Books are beautiful to look at, to feel and to smell.
For hundreds of years we have been blessed with the ability to learn and to yearn for other worlds as a result of the imaginiation of countless writers. I could not imagine living in a world devoid of CS Lewis, EM Forrester, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Mordecai Richler and many many others.(And yes, Stephen King!)
We are fortunate to have been in such wonderful times. More fortunate than most of us even know. The demise of the printed book will be a terrible thing to many persons.

Storm clouds ahead for America

Storm clouds ahead for America

This is a disturbing article on the waning powers of the USA and other major world bodies such as the UN, WTO and a few other choice things.
Global conflict driven by global water and food shortages, a USA with zero military clout and terrorists that can easily access weapons of mass destruction.
The good thing about being 45 is perhaps I will miss out on this mess of stuff. The bad thing is, knowing that my children will have to remain and fight for their lives in the coming years as the world goes to war over water and space.

Delta Airbus Comes Under Attack From Terrorist Connected To Al Qaida

PASSENGERS FIGHT WOULD BE PLANE BOMBER
Passengers on a Delta Airbus flight from Amsterdam are lucky to have survived after a would be terrorist working on his own but suspected of working in concert with Al Qaida attempted to light himself on fire with some sort of explosives utilizing a syringe and powder that was taped to his leg as the plane m,ade its' final descent towards Detroit, Michigan.
Passengers on the flight noticed smoke rising from between the seats and the quick actions of those passengers are being credited with foiling the plot to detonate the plane.
The man suffered serious second degree burns in the attack but was expected to live. He is being held in custody in a Detroit prison hospital.
Two of the passengers on the flight were injured as well but there was no word on their conditions this morning.Their injuries were considered minor by law enforcement officials.
Homeland Security says that "Passengers may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights" as a result of this matter. They are still investigating whether or not this was part of a much larger broader attack and have ordered wider inspections of all aircraft that are entering the continental United States.
